Background: ABO blood group antigens may play a role in the pathophysiology of certain diseases. Several studies have investigated the relation between blood group and autoimmune disorders. In this research, we evaluated the associations between ABO blood types and rhesus (Rh) factor in pemphigus patients.Methods: In this case-control, hospital-based study, we evaluated the prevalence of blood group on 110 pemphigus patients and 126 controls. The chi-square test was used to compare qualitative variables and examine the relationship between blood groups and Rh in pemphigus patients and a control group.Results: Blood group (O) was found in 46.3% (O+ 38.2%) of patients with pemphigus, followed by blood type A (30.0%; A+ 27.3%), and blood groups B and AB. Compared to the control group, we noted that the distribution of blood groups, with Rh (P=0.73) or without Rh (P=0.52), did not significantly differ.Conclusion: Although some associations between blood group antigens and specific diseases have been reported in the literature, this study did not find any statistically significant relationship between blood groups and pemphigus disease.

Background: Different modalities have been tried in order totreat stable vitiligo. Culturing melanocytes is time consumingand expensive. Therefore, new methods using autologousmelanocytes are sought. We aimed to compare the mixed nonculturedautologous melanocytes of the outer root sheath andthe bulge area of hair follicle transplantation plus dermabrasionwith dermabrasion alone in stable generalized vitiligo patchesrepigmentation.Method: Eight patients with stable generalized vitiligo wererecruited. Two patches were selected and assigned to one of thestudy groups: one was treated with dermabrasion alone, andthe other was treated with dermabrasion and transplantation.Uncultured melanocytes were extracted from the patients’ hairfollicle outer root sheath and bulge. The patches were assessedmonthly for the next six months. The primary outcome was todetermine the percentage changes of the depigmented patchesfrom the baseline.Result: Although the repigmentation changes were statisticallysignificant in transplantation patches, there was only one patchwith good and another with fair pigmentation. Furthermore,seven patches without and one patch with poor pigmentationwere observed as control lesions. The transplanted patchesdemonstrated a significantly better repigmentation rate in contrastto their controls (p=0.03).Conclusion: Although this method is fast and economic, theclinical response was not satisfactory.

Treatment of melasma has remained a hottopic in dermatology because of its resistance totherapy and high recurrence rate. For many yearshydroquinone was the foundation of melasmatreatment, but its use has been limited during theseyears due to a number of adverse events, suchas skin irritation, hyper and hypo pigmentation,nail discoloration, conjunctival melanosis andochronosis. Furthermore hydroquinone is quiteunstable and is quickly oxidized and becomeinactive. So Hydroquinone is gradually beingreplaced by new lightning substances, such as kojicacid, phytic acid, azaleic acid, arbutin, mequinol,aleosin, ascorbic acid, soya proteins, N-acetylglucosamine and licorice. In this study weevaluate the effect of a licorice containing product(lightening serum, LANGE Paris) for the treatmentof melasma. There are several active ingredientsin licorice extract effective on melasma. These areliquiritin, glabridin, licochalcone A and isoliquertin.

Background: Fibroblasts are mesenchymal cells that can be readily cultured in the laboratory and play a significant role in epithelialmesenchymal interactions, secreting various growth factors and cytokines that have a direct effect on epidermal proliferation, differentiation and formation of extracellular matrix. They have been incorporated into various tissue-engineered and used for a variety of clinical applications, including the treatment of burns, chronic venous ulcers and several other clinical applications in dermatology and plastic surgery. Method: Isolated fibroblasts by the enzymatic process from foreskin were cultivated successively in a culture medium to establish cell banking. Foreskin and the last subcultured cells were checked for HBV, HCV, HIV, HSV I, HSV II, HTLV I, HTLV II, EBV, CMV, Treponema Pallidum, Mycoplasma sp. and Clamydia. The 1st, 5th and 10th subcultured cells were processed for immunocytochemistry studies using a panel of monoclonal antibodies including antibodies to MHC class I & II antigens for ensuring the elimination of superficial cell antigens during cultivation. Subcultured cells were karyotyped to find any chromosomal abnormalities. The best passages were chosen for culturing on silicone sheets provided by the Iran Polymer and Petrochemical Institute. Results: Evaluation for bacteria and viruses by molecular methods was negative. Karyotyping of cultured fibroblasts after the 10th passage showed some abnormalities. HLA expression was imperceptible in the cells obtained from the 10th sub-culture. The best passages were from 5th to 10th for banking and culturing on silicone sheets. Conclusion: Expression of HLA on fibroblast surfaces was diminished during subculturing. To prevent chromosomal abnormalities in fibroblast passaging, we should select the best colony that is expected to be chromosomally stable with the least antigenicity. In our study, the 5th to 10th sub-cultures were the best cells for the purpose of grafting and acceleration of the wound healing.

Syringoma is a benign adnexal tumor originated from the intraepidermal portion of eccrine sweat duct. They commonly present as soft, flesh colored to slightly yellow dermal papules on the lower eyelids of healthy individuals. It usually occurs in the peri-pubertal period. There are a few reports of its widespread distribution as eruptive syringoma in the literature. Treatment of this benign condition is cosmetic only in both localized and eruptive form. Herein, a case of a 29 year old female with one year history of eruptive syringomas is presented.

Background: Human fibroblasts are the part of the dermis that secrete extracellular matrix for the purpose of tissue repair. Culturing fibroblasts, which leads to formation of a monolayer of these cells, is used for treating various conditions including thermal burns and other skin defects such as diabetic and varicose vein leg ulcers. Therefore, we aimed at developing a fibroblast bank to accomplish multiple goals including skin repair in defects such as burns and ulcers and also performing various research projects on these cells in order to further study of the mechanisms involved in wound healing, rejuvenation and medication effects. Method: We initially developed primary cultures of skin fibroblasts in a DMEM medium. These primary cultures were formed by washing and trypsinizing foreskin specimens followed by separation of epidermis from dermis and cutting the dermis into small pieces. In about 10 days, a monolayer of fibroblasts was formed. Result: We were able to develop the fibroblast bank successfully and to initiate other projects utilizing this bank. Conclusions: With these cultured cells, we would be able to perform different research projects including studying the mechanisms of wound healing, rejuvenation, drug affects, inflammatory mediators, growth factors, etc. Moreover, further progress in this field will result in our independence from requesting these cells from external sources.
