In several reports a close relationship between lichen planus and chronic viral hepatitis has been demonstrated. According to the high prevalence of hepatitis B in communities like Iran and especially in Sistan-va-Baloochestan, a prospective study was performed for screening HBV markers in patients suffering lichen planus to detect the prevalence of HBsAg positive cases in them, comparing with general population, i.e. 4%. On the other hand we decided to detect some groups of lichen planus patients that this ratio mat be more in them. On this basis, 80 patients were studied during 9 months. 8 cases (10%) were HBsAg positive, showing significant increase comparing to the general population (4%). Also, the prevalence of HBsAg positive cases was greatly more in patients who had oral mucosal membrane involvement (41.2% of all patients).

Introduction: Since there is no study in our country about determination the effects of psychogenic factors on psoriasis and because it seems necessary to evaluate the triggering factors of disease in order to lengthen the remission period and decrease the costs and complications, this study was performed to identify the relationship of stress with psoriasis expression and the severity of skin lesions. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective case-control study with simple random sampling which has been performed on 95 subjects above 18 year old in Razi Hospital. The case group was selected from psoriatic patients and the control group from non-psoriatic patients in whom stress does not have any effect on their disease. Two groups were matched for age and sex. Stress was assessed by Holmes and Rahe protocol with some modifications approved by a psychiatrist. Severity of skin lesions in psoriatic patients was also assessed by PASI score. Data Analysis was performed by T test, multiple logistic regression and correlation of Spearman using SPSS (6) software. Results: The mean of severity of stress in psoriatic group was higher than control group (P=0.021). On the other hand, there was a relationship between stress and psoriasis expression; but there was no statistically significant correlation between severity of stress and severity of skin lesions in psoriatic patients (P=0.268). Discussion: Paying attention to the effect of stress on the expression of psoriasis, it is suggested to use psychological methods in addition to routine treatment: So we can reduce emotional stress and shorten the course of this disease.

Introduction: Macular amyloidosis is a relatively rare disease. A basic change appears to be amyloid material deposition in an apparently normal skin. The characteristic features of the disease are reticulate and ripple brown pigmentation in interscapular regions. Shoulder, back and chest. There are several reports indicating the association of the disease with rubbing against the skin. According to high frequency of the disease in our area especially among the women and due to its disability such as disfigurement for women, we decided to perform the following study. Materials and Methods: The study is an analytic descriptive one. Twenty-eight patients suffering from macular amyloidosis defined by clinical and laboratory findings were reviewed. The study being performed from October 1995 to October 1998 in University hospital dermatological clinics in Isfahan. Results: Twenty-one females and seven males were considered in the study. The age range was between 15-50 years. There was a positive family history in 43% of patients. Clinically the lesions were composed of reticulate and rippled pigmentation frequently observed in interscapular, upper arms and shoulder regions. The most common association in these patients was seborrheic dermatitis of scalp and face. In this study most of the patients mentioned the use of nylon brush during bathing and some of them relieved their itching with comb and brush. Conclusion: Female to male ratio in our study was three to one, which is compatible with higher frequency of disease among women in recent reports. The age range of patients was frequently between 15-34 years that is in young adults. A direct relationship was present between nylon brush or comb use during bathing and exacerbation of the disease. The traditional habit of using nylon objects during bathing might explain the high prevalence of this disorder in our community.

Molluscum contagiosum is an infectious viral disease. The necessity to do this research in primary school of Kerman is mainly based on the high occurrence of the molluscum contagiosum (MC) among children, though an increase of the incidence of MC in adults with AIDS and immune deficiencies has also been reported. Among 1181 girls and 1440 boys, 75 were infected with MC; 29 (2.45%) and 46 (3.1%) cases were infected respectively, however these differences were not statistically significant. The effect of factors such as age, sex, parent’s level of education and occupation, and the size of family on the incidence of MC were studied. In this research the overall incidence of MC was 2.9%, but the highest rate of incidence was among children at the age of 6. Furthermore the incidence among children in public schools were more than private schools and children from families with low education and also larger families was higher, though these differences were not statistically significant.

Among the countless examples of interspecific interactions in biology, surely non-could be more interesting than which established between host animals and their specific parasites. The members of the genus Leishmania are peculiar obligate intracellular protozoans in that they proliferate in the enzyme rich phagolysosomes, an organelle which is essential component of all defence reactions of animals. These parasites are responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide and have, consequently, been the subject of much study, which has had the underlying objective of discovering the means of controlling these organisms. Explosion of medical information, increase in the speed of communications and the pressure of WHO on observing scientific rules, oblige dermatologists to have a good education and to use more effective education principles. A brief review on the publications on learning principles reveals only a small role for dermatologists. The minimum benefits of these principles are to acquire a scientific basis to found a suitable pattern for continuing education for us and for teaching our students. Learning and teaching skills can be improved by scientific education. Successful teaching will result in a positive feedback encouraging both teachers and residents. This review will mostly emphasize on learning skills.

Systemic drugs are used in the treatment of several skin diseases. In order to obtain best therapeutic results and prevent side effects, the patients should be carefully screened before and thoroughly evaluated during treatment. In this article guidelines for selection and follow up of patients receiving systemic drugs for their skin diseases are presented. These drugs include azathioprine, anti-malarials, spironolactone, PUVA, dapson, retinoids, cyclosporin, cyclophosphamide, gold, colchicine, corticosteroids, and methotrexate.
