Background: Seborrheic keratosis is a common benign tumor and many modalities are used to treat it. No convincing data favors the therapeutic effect of calcipotriol on seborrheic keratosis. We aimed to assess the efficacy of calcipotriol in the treatment of this tumor.Method: Eligible patients aged over 40 years with seborrheic keratosis (size: 5-15mm) were instructed to apply 50?g/g calcipotriol ointment twice a day for 12 weeks. The size of the tumor was measured at baseline and after the 12-week period. The size change and improvement were assessed. Result: Thirty out of fifty screened patients were eligible for the study and completed the 12-week course of the study. The mean baseline size of the tumors was 9.30±2.95 mm that decreased to the mean size of 2.02±1.94 mm (P

Background: Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin disorder. There has been considerable interest in herbal medicine as a treatment for psoriasis. In a previous study HESA-A, a marine-herbal drug, was found to be beneficial in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of HESA-A in patients with psoriasis. Methods: Nineteen patients with a mean PASI score of 13.04±6.14 (min=3.90, max=27.70) were recruited to receive daily dosage of 30 mg/kg of HESA-A tablets for at least 4 weeks. The patients were followed every two weeks for determining PASI score changes and drug side effects until the end of the study. Result: At the end of the study, the mean PASI score of the patients reduced to 9.60±5.30 (min=0.90, max=19.1). PASI score reduced in 14 patients (73.7%) and increased in 5 patients (26.3%) during the study. Two patients achieved 75 to 100% improvement in PASI score and two achieved 50 to 75%. In 10 patients (52.6%), 1 to 50% improvement in the PASI score was detected. There was a statically significant correlation between the duration of treatment and PASI improvement. (P-value = 0.024) Conclusion: Although this drug was very safe and tolerable, our study did not find rapid and acceptable efficacy in the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis as shown in a previous study. According to our findings, HESA-A was more effective when used for a prolonged time and in respect of the safety profile of HESA-A, we can use this drug as a maintenance or adjuvant therapy for chronic plaque psoriasis in longer terms.

Background and aim: Appearance concerns are increasingly common. Indeed, clinical surveys in the private settings show that more and more people are dissatisfied with some aspects of their physical appearance. Concurrently, there is increasing demand for cosmetic specialists to perform procedures to enhance physical appearance. It is hypothetized that body image and acceptance of cosmetic surgery in the individual's environment motivate patients to have cosmetic procedure. Current study aimed to determine the demographics and body image concerns in persons seeking botulinum toxin type A injection as a cosmetic enhancement in private dermatologic clinics.Materials and methods: A questionnaire survey was done on 116 applicants attending 13 private dermatologic practices in Tehran. Results: The level of academic education and employment of women seeking this procedure was significantly higher than the average Iranian women. Forty-four percent of applicants reported previous cosmetic surgery which was significantly related to the experience of surgery among their first degree relatives. The number of applicants 20-35 years old was twice the number observed in USA, in the same age group. Conclusion: The high number of applicants in lower age groups is significant in this study. The best predictors of motivation for this cosmetic procedure were the level of education and individual's environmental acceptance, not their income.
