Background: Numerous lasers are currently available for hair removal. Objective: To study the efficacy of a pulsed diode laser for removing unwanted hair. Patients and Methods: In this quasi-experimental clinical trial, 39 patients with unwanted hairs on chin referred to Novin-Didegan Laser Center in Tehran were treated with a diode laser system (Palomar, 810nm). Fluences ranging from 40 to 64 J/cm² (Mean, 48.3 J/cm²) were used and 3 to 7 treatment sessions with 4-6 weeks apart were performed. Evaluation of hair reduction was performed 6 months after the last treatment using paired t test. Results: Six months after the last treatment hair reduction was more than 75% in 23 patients. The mean hair reduction was 74.7%±20.5. Transient hyperpigmentation was observed in 9 patients (23%). Conclusion: The 810nm diode laser is an efficient and a safe modality for hair removal in all skin types.

Background: Various environmental factors can induce or exaggerate hand eczema. Objective: Evaluation of patch test results in hand eczema patients. Patients and Methods: In this descriptive study 100 patients with hand eczema referred to Loghman Hakim and Booali Hospital in Tehran underwent patch testing with 23 allergens obtained from Hermal company. Results: 240 positive reactions observed in 86 patients. The most common positive reactions were related to nickel sulfate (30 patients, 13.5%) and potassium dichromate (28 patients, 11.7%). In positive group 28 patients were male and 58 were female. In negative group 3 patients were male and 11 were female (P>0.05). The mean age was 31.7±11.9 years and 24.8±9.2 years for positive group and negative group, respectively (P0.05). Conclusion: Performing patch test, the allergens involved in hand eczema can be detected. Detecting type of allergens, patients will be able to avoid those materials, which can lead to improvement of disease.

Background: The need for a rapid, non-invasive method for unwanted hair removal has led to the development of various light sources for this purpose. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Intense Pulsed Light Source (IPLS) on unwanted hairs. Patients and Methods: In this open, uncontrolled clinical trial, 77 different anatomical areas in 34 referred patients to “Novin Didegan Clinic” in Tehran in 1380-1381, were treated by IPLS at fluences ranging from 22 to 34 J/cm² after their demographic data and the number of hairs were recorded. The 3 to 7 treatment sessions were accomplished 4 to 6 weeks apart. All of the patients were followed 6 months after the last therapy. The quantitative data were analyzed by paired t test. Results: Six months after the last therapy, more than 50% reduction in number of hairs were noted in 80% of the treated areas; with mean reduction of 72±23 percent. Side effects were mild and reversible and occurred in ten patients. Conclusion: The IPLS appears to provide an effective and safe method for long-term excess hair removal in various skin types.

Background: The current treatments of recurrent aphthous stomatitis are not very effective and are not justified for long term using due to their potential side effects. Objective: To compare the efficacy of topical sucralfate mouthwash with topical tetracycline mouthwash in recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Patients and Methods: In a randomized matched clinical trial, 60 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis fulfilling our inclusion criteria, referred to skin clinics affiliated to Skin Research Center in Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in 1380-81 were assessed. The patients were randomly divided in two groups, matched for age and type of the ulcer. The case group (26 patients) used a mouthwash containing 1gr sucralfate per 15cc, and the control group (34 patients) used a mouthwash containing 250mg tetracycline per 15cc, four times a day and were assessed every 2 weeks. The data were analyzed by chi-square and t-tests (P<0.05). Results: There were no significant difference between two groups regarding the frequency, healing time and pain of the aphthous lesions. Patients were more satisfied with the sucralfate suspension than tetracycline suspension in the end of treatment period (P<0.03) and in the end of follow up period (P<0.04). No side effects were seen in two group. Conclusion: Sucralfate suspension mouthwash can be considered equally effective as tetracycline mouthwash in treating recurrent aphthous stomatitis. It can be considered as a special modality for aphthous ulcer treatment due to lack of systemic toxicity and side effects even if accidentally swallowed or absorbed through mucosal surfaces.

Background: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in patients with rosacea is reported from 50 to 90 percent, which suggests the possibility of the role of this organism in pathogenesis of rosacea. Objectives: Evaluation of relationship between H. pylori infection and rosacea. Patients and Methods: In this case-control study, 30 patients referred to skin clinics of Boo-Ali and Loghman Hakim hospitals in Tehran were compared with 30 individuals of similar sex and age who had not rosacea (Control group). Serologic tests for H. pylori infection (IgG and IgA), and also urea breath test were done. The results were compared using chi-square test with 95% confidence interval and P<0.05 was considered as significant. Results: No significant differences were seen between patients with rosacea and control group in having IgA (60% in case group, 40% in control group), IgG (76.6% in case group, 53.3% in control group) and positive breath test. Conclusion: More extensive research about possible relationship between H. pylori infection and rosacea is recommended.
